Linux Fans Say The Darnest Thing

Hi, I'm a Software Engineer who is tired of the Linux Community growing with immature crazy extremist fans trying to be l33t.

Do You Hate Linux

No, I like Linux. I don’t like Linux followers.

It’s kind of like when you say that Jesus was awesome, his followers suck.

Window 7 Sins

http://en.windows7sins.org/

I’ve known about this site for a while, but I decided to write about it.  It’s hard to respect FSF when they post FUD. I know you will say that Microsoft and Apple do FUD against FSF, but that doesn’t matter. I expect that from companies, but not from FSF who claim to be fighting for freedom.

  • Poisoning education:

“Increasingly, computers are expected to be useful tools in our children’s education. But today, most children whose education involves computers are being taught to use one company’s product: Microsoft’s — Microsoft spends large sums of money on lobbyists and marketing to procure the support of educational departments.”

This is sorta wrong… When I was in school we had Macs and Windows PC. I see other schools that move completely to Macs. As for teaching kids how to use MS Office, it makes sense because a lot of companies use MS Office.

  • Invading privacy

“Microsoft uses software with backward names like Windows Genuine Advantage to inspect the contents of users’ hard drives. The licensing agreement users are required to accept before using Windows warns that Microsoft claims the right to do this without warning.”

Yes because Microsoft is always watching what you have on your hard drive. All WGA look at:

  • Computer make and model
  • BIOS checksum.
  • MAC address.
  • A unique number assigned to the user’s computer by the tools (Globally Unique Identifier or GUID)
  • Hard drive serial number.
  • Region and language settings of the operating system.
  • Operating system version.
  • PC BIOS information (make, version, date).
  • PC manufacturer.
  • User locale setting.
  • Validation and installation results.
  • Windows or Office product key.
  • Windows product ID.

They are not scanning your hard drive going “oh look what kind of porn this guy has!”

  •  Monopoly behavior

“Nearly every computer purchased has Windows pre-installed – but not by choice. Microsoft dictates requirements to hardware vendors, who will not offer PCs without Windows installed on them, despite many people asking for them. Even computers available with other operating systems like GNU/Linux pre-installed often had Windows on them first.”

It’s business, the vendors need an OS and they make a deal with Microsoft. It’s not monopoly behavior if they were able to get GNU/Linux machines out there. When they did have GNU/Linux machines, they didn’t sold as well. There were people bringing them back asking for a machine with Windows because they either didn’t know how to use GNU/Linux or they wanted to run software that GNU/Linux couldn’t run.

  • Lock-in

Microsoft regularly attempts to force updates on its users, by removing support for older versions of Windows and Office, and by inflating hardware requirements. For many people, this means having to throw away working computers just because they don’t meet the unnecessary requirements for the new Windows versions.”

Again, it’s business. There’s no point in supporting MS Office from 1998 if no one is really using it. It’s not really a lock-in. If they really don’t want to use MS Office, most people know about free alternative like Libre Office.

Software is building up to need stronger machines everyday. My laptop from 1993 will not be able to run the latest Window nor the latest Linux Mint.

    • Abusing standards

Most consumers don’t care about the standards, I don’t see a problem (Legally) with them not freeing up their standards for their document format.

    • Enforcing Digital Restrictions Management

They enforce DRM, doesn’t mean you can’t play non-drm songs. I can buy non-drm songs from the Zune Marketplace and play it with the Zune player. The NBC example the site gives is that NBC didn’t want people to record the stuff with their computers so MS prevented them. It’s NBC, if they don’t want you doing it, then just go to someone else.

    •  Threatening user security

Yes because, MS doesn’t care about security, except for the fact that they’ve made several improvements so Security since XP. MS does care about the User’s security because they want the user’s to be happy. If the user’s are not happy, they will go to someone else.

      Linux Mint

I used to be a huge fan of Fedora, but I’m starting to like Linux Mint. It’s a really nice Linux Distro, I highly recommend it.

      Why Linux is better

      Made. My. Day.

      LMAO XD

Forget about viruses- There’s still viruses for a unix-like OS

Linux Protects Your Computer - All OSes do there best to protect your computer, all OSes get Malware sometimes

Forget About Drivers - Not always true, depends on the machine

Update all your software with a single click - Also not true, I’ve seen problems happen before with the updating software, (not too common though)

Why copy software illegally when you can have it for free - Because GIMP is no where near Photoshop, I still prefer Excel over the Libre office version as well.

Choose what your desktop looks like - You can do this with Windows

Are you tired of restarting your computer all the time - No, I usually only restart once a month, it’s the same with my linux boxes

Play hundreds of games for free - Again, I can do this with Windows and get even better games

      Virus no exist

“Viruses don’t exist on UNIX based OS, viruses exist only on Windows ecosystem. So it’s of no use. However malwares, trojans do exist but they will only infect your machine if you are stupid enough to manually run them” -shellcoder

Viruses do exist for UNIX based OS.

There’s no such thing as a fair comparison between Windows and Linux from the FOSS crowd. No fact shall remain untwisted, no semantic loophole left unused.

When it comes to features; Windows only has a browser, media player and simple utilities. Linux has Office suites, mail servers, web servers, IDEs and DVDs worth of applications.

However, when it’s bug count, Windows suddenly also includes Office, Exchange, Visual Studio, two instances of SQL Server, IIS and Photoshop. Linux is just a kernel.

Add a feature to Linux? Best feature ever, can’t live without it.
Add a feature to Windows? Bloat! Copied from Apple! Anti-trust!

Any feature not in Windows? Why isn’t this feature in?
Any feature not in Linux? You didn’t need it anyway!

Windows Aero? Resource hungry, useless eye-candy.
      Compiz? Absolute must-have! Spinning cubes!

(For those that say Compiz/Ruby was first or is better, Google “Vista wobbly windows WinHec 2003″. Note how the windows don’t tear when moved, unlike Compiz!)

Benchmarks from established and trusted sources, with reproducible methodology that show Windows is better – shills, FUD, lies, MS paid for results, corrupt.
Benchmark from random blog with questionable (if any) methodology showing Linux is better – holy gospel truth.

Windows bluescreens several times a day.
      Kernel panics do not exist.

Any Windows-only program = unoriginal, buggy, useless rubbish.
Linux programs – Original, innovative, not in fact, clones of successful Windows apps.

Copying interface changes from Windows apps into the OSS clones is OK, even though they’re much maligned in the Windows version… I’m looking at you, OpenOffice. If they’re so crap, why clone them?

It’s OK to infringe copyrights of music and films, but don’t dare violate the GPL. It’s copyright, you know.

The double standards exhibited are staggering.

Doing things that are impossible response to “linux sucks”

      pffff XD

      Switching sides for mobile

It appears that way. Slow, clunky OS[Android] that often needs reboots and antivirus appears to be doing extremely well. Kudos Google.

If only sales people knew about WP7.”

      Did we switch sides….

On the desktop Linux Fans said that Windows was slow, clunky, need reboot and antivirus

while they said that people just need to know about Ubuntu or some other linux distro

      WinXP ->GNU/Linux

Many XPers will migrate to GNU/Linux to keep their hardware and thin clients and web applications will make M$ irrelevant on the desktop within five years.”

      -Mr. Pogson

I think not, I would see very few people move from XP to GNU/Linux. I see several companies still on XP planning on moving to Windows 7.  Companies still have legacy apps that they need to run(Win7+XP Mode will be helpful) and companies that use MS Office and will need that still will stick with that for their Macros and better file support.

How dare you don’t like Linux

It’s an awesome OS, unlike "Windoze”. Linux rules, and if you don’t agree, well you can fuck right off.“

LMFAO “…comes with openoffice, not microsoft word.” This bitch is fucking stupid. Make her keep her machine.“

"I blame her for failing Linux.”

      Capitalism

“Proprietary software is not capitalist. It is mercantilist. It is grounded in monopolistic practices and relies on protectionism at a global and local level. Free software is actually capitalist as it engages free markets.”

Linux Review: Linux Kernel 3.0 released, adds support for Microsoft Kinect

Yeah,, it really doesn’t matter what OS you’re using for CS

We get it, you hate Microsoft

I don’t understand why so many hardcore Linux fan have a deep hatred for Microsoft. We get it, you think Linux is much better. Doesn’t mean everyone needs to switch what you’re using. They always accuse Microsoft being the only FUD thrower when in fact the FOSS/Linux crew is known to throw FUD as well.

If you like Linux, then use Linux. Don’t try to make a holy war about Operating Systems because it doesn’t matter. Use whatever gets the job done.

Stop with all the bullshit that Linux is better because every professional computer scientist uses it(which isn’t true). Stop trying to tell people how much you hate Microsoft. (Like how most people who extremely hate MS need to tell you that by putting M$, Winblows, Mafiasoft, Phoney 7, Vista 2.0(Meaning Win7))

I have no idea where I was going with this.

Linux Fans certainly know about Windows….

Last, why can’t Microsoft offer systems that are truly multi user?”

I was able to remote desktop into a Window Server while my co-worker was still remote desktoped into it.
